Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to nurses across the world, especially those serving in Pakistan, in a special message issued on the occasion of International Nurses Day observed on May 12, 2026.

The Prime Minister praised male and female nurses for their selfless dedication to humanity and acknowledged their vital contribution to the healthcare system. He said the annual observance, marked globally by the International Council of Nurses, highlights the importance of international cooperation in the medical field.

Referring to this year’s theme, “Nurses: Our Future, Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” the Prime Minister said it reflects the significance of professional expertise and quality medical training in strengthening healthcare services worldwide.

He stated that professionally trained nurses play a critical role in saving lives by providing timely medical care and supporting patients during difficult times. Describing nurses as true servants of humanity, he said caring for the sick represents the highest example of compassion and public service.

The Prime Minister further noted that nurses continue to serve on the front lines despite challenging working conditions and limited incentives. According to him, effective and accessible healthcare services in any country cannot function without the dedication and commitment of nursing professionals.

He also emphasised that a strong healthcare system depends on a balanced ratio of doctors and nurses. The federal government, he said, remains committed to improving this ratio across Pakistan through coordinated planning with relevant institutions and provincial governments.

The message comes as healthcare workers worldwide are being recognised for their contribution to public health, emergency response, and patient care. Officials say the government aims to further strengthen the nursing sector through better training opportunities, institutional support, and workforce development initiatives in the coming years.
