SUPARCO predicts Eid ul Adha likely on May 27 in Pakistan

Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission has predicted that Eid ul Adha 2026 in Pakistan is likely to be observed on Wednesday, May 27, based on astronomical calculations related to the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah moon.
According to SUPARCO’s preliminary assessment, there is a strong possibility that the crescent moon for Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH will be visible on the evening of May 17. The agency stated that the new moon is expected to be born at approximately 1:01am on the same day.
By sunset on May 17, the moon’s age is projected to reach around 18 hours and 30 minutes, which experts generally consider favorable for visibility under suitable weather conditions. SUPARCO added that the gap between sunset and moonset in Pakistan’s coastal regions is expected to be close to 60 minutes, increasing the chances of successful moon sighting.
The agency noted that clear visibility of the crescent usually becomes more likely when the moon’s age approaches 20 hours. Based on current calculations, Pakistan is expected to complete 29 days of Dhul Qadah, making May 27 the probable date for Eid ul Adha celebrations.
Despite the scientific forecast, officials emphasized that the final decision regarding moon sighting and the official Eid date will be announced by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee following its formal meeting chaired by Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad.
Moon sighting announcements hold significant importance in Pakistan, where religious observances such as Ramadan, Eid ul Fitr, and Eid ul Adha are traditionally confirmed through official testimony and committee verification alongside astronomical data.
Authorities are expected to issue final confirmations closer to the expected sighting date after reviewing weather conditions and receiving reports from across the country.
