Punjab police make biometric verification mandatory in stations

The Punjab Police has made biometric verification mandatory in police stations across the province in collaboration with National Database and Registration Authority, aiming to enhance transparency and improve identification processes.
Under the new directive, no suspect or complainant can be registered at a police station without undergoing biometric verification. The move is intended to ensure accurate identification and prevent fraudulent or false entries in police records.
Authorities have also ordered the activation of a biometric module in the Police Station Record Management System (PSRMS). All police stations have been instructed to ensure the availability of biometric devices within seven days. Police officers have been directed to immediately inspect existing stock and address any shortages.
In addition, attendance of police personnel will now be recorded through the biometric system. Officials believe this will improve accountability and streamline administrative processes within the department.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to modernise policing and introduce digital solutions for efficient service delivery. By integrating biometric verification, authorities aim to speed up the identification of suspects and citizens while ensuring greater accuracy in record-keeping.
The Inspector General Punjab Police Office has directed all relevant departments to submit a compliance report within seven days, ensuring timely implementation of the new system.
Officials say the system will not only enhance operational efficiency but also build public trust by making procedures more transparent and secure. The use of biometric technology is expected to minimise impersonation and improve the overall quality of police investigations.
The directive marks a significant step toward digitisation and accountability in law enforcement across Punjab.
