Pakistan has entered a new phase of maritime self-reliance with the establishment of the National Dredging and Marine Services (NDMS), aimed at developing domestic capacity in dredging operations and reducing dependence on foreign firms.

The newly formed company is a joint venture involving the National Logistics Corporation, Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Port Qasim Authority, and Gwadar Port Authority. Officials say the initiative marks a coordinated effort to strengthen Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure and support long-term economic growth through the blue economy.

The NDMS has officially begun dredging services at Port Qasim following an inauguration ceremony. The move is expected to enhance the operational efficiency of the port by maintaining required water depth in shipping channels, ensuring uninterrupted maritime traffic, and improving cargo handling capacity.

Authorities say the development will significantly reduce reliance on international dredging companies, leading to savings in foreign exchange and improved cost efficiency in port operations. The adoption of modern dredging technology is also expected to help Pakistan meet international standards in port maintenance and marine logistics.

Officials added that the initiative will play a key role in sustaining the navigability of key ports, which are critical for Pakistan’s trade and energy imports. By improving channel depth and reducing sediment buildup, the project aims to support larger vessels and increase overall port throughput.

Experts view the launch of NDMS as an important milestone in Pakistan’s broader strategy to strengthen its maritime economy, often referred to as the blue economy. It is also seen as a step toward building technical expertise within the country in a sector traditionally dominated by foreign service providers.

The project is expected to contribute to long-term economic resilience by improving port efficiency, reducing operational costs, and enhancing Pakistan’s strategic maritime capabilities.
