Sindh lifts market closing timing restriction

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced on Saturday that the provincial government has withdrawn fixed closing timings for commercial establishments, including shops, markets, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, food outlets, wedding halls and marquees.

According to a notification shared on social media platform X, all such businesses have been exempted from the previously imposed 9pm closure restriction. The decision reverses an earlier policy introduced as part of energy-saving and austerity measures.

Sharjeel Memon said the move was aimed at facilitating both businesses and citizens, stressing that the government remains committed to supporting economic activity and easing public inconvenience. He described the business community as the backbone of the economy and said the decision reflects a broader policy focus on economic growth and public convenience.

Trump’s Iran strategy stalls as rhetoric and reality collide

The earlier restrictions had been introduced last month when the Sindh government directed commercial outlets across Karachi and other divisional headquarters to shut by 9pm on all days of the week, including weekends. The measure was part of wider efforts to reduce energy consumption amid a global fuel crisis linked to geopolitical tensions.

At the federal level, similar energy conservation measures had also been introduced, including earlier closing times for markets across most provinces. However, provincial governments have gradually begun relaxing these restrictions in response to economic pressure and appeals from traders.

The latest decision in Sindh follows a similar relaxation announced in Punjab a day earlier, where authorities partially eased business hour restrictions until June 1 after protests from traders and requests from business associations.

Economists and trade representatives have long argued that rigid closing times negatively affect retail activity, employment, and small business revenues, especially in urban centers where night-time commerce plays a significant role in economic circulation.

The rollback is expected to restore normal commercial hours across Sindh, potentially boosting retail activity and consumer spending.
