A 38-year-old man was killed in a shark attack near Rottnest Island in Western Australia on Saturday, according to local authorities and international media reports.

The incident occurred at Horseshoe Reef, a popular location for diving and fishing situated near the city of Perth. Officials said the victim was attacked while in the water during the morning hours.

Australian authorities identified the attacking animal as a great white shark measuring approximately four metres in length. Emergency responders transported the injured man by boat to a safer location where medical teams attempted to save his life, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

The attack has renewed concerns over shark encounters along Australia’s coastline, particularly in areas known for water sports and marine tourism. Rottnest Island is a well-known destination visited by divers, surfers, and tourists throughout the year.

Media reports noted that Australia has recorded several shark-related incidents this year, while fatal attacks were also reported in different coastal regions during the previous year. Experts say the country’s eastern and southeastern coastlines experience an average of around 20 shark attacks annually.

Authorities often monitor beaches and coastal waters using drones, patrol boats, and warning systems to reduce risks to swimmers and divers. However, encounters with large sharks remain an ongoing concern in parts of Australia due to the country’s extensive coastline and active marine ecosystem.

Marine experts say great white sharks are commonly found in Australian waters, particularly during migration and feeding seasons. While attacks on humans remain relatively rare compared to the number of people entering the ocean each year, fatal incidents continue to draw significant public attention.

Officials have urged beachgoers and divers to follow local safety advisories and avoid entering waters where shark sightings have been reported.
