Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has officially announced the launch of a new T20 tournament called the Afghanistan Premier League. The league aims to boost local cricket and attract global attention, with the Afghanistan Premier League T20 marking an important step in the country’s cricket development.

According to an official ACB press release, the first season of the league will feature five city-based franchise teams. These teams will include top Afghan national players, international stars, and emerging local talent.

ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf said at the launch event in Dubai that the league is a major milestone for Afghanistan cricket. He stated that the tournament will create new opportunities for players, inspire young cricketers, and help promote Afghan cricket worldwide.

The inaugural season of the tournament is planned to begin in October 2026 in the United Arab Emirates. The player draft or auction is expected to take place in June or July 2026.

It is worth noting that a similar league was launched in early 2018 but lasted only one season due to management issues. This time, officials hope the Afghanistan Premier League T20 will be more transparent and successful, alongside existing domestic events like the Shpageeza Cricket League.
