Controversial Referee Andy Pycroft to Officiate India-Pakistan Match

DUBAI: ICC match referee Andy Pycroft will oversee the high-stakes India-Pakistan Super 4 clash in the Asia Cup on Sunday. The match will take place at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 21. Pycroft’s appointment comes despite recent controversy surrounding his conduct during the earlier Group B match. That incident took place on September 14 and sparked a strong reaction from Pakistan.
During the Group B encounter, Pycroft stopped the team captains from shaking hands after the match. The unexpected action caused confusion and was seen as a breach of cricketing norms. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expressed strong concern over the move. Pycroft later clarified the situation, calling it a misunderstanding and offered an official apology to Pakistan’s team manager and captain.
The PCB PCB took a firm stance and demanded accountability from the ICC. Pakistan also called for Pycroft’s removal from further Asia Cup duties. Moreover, they asked the ICC to penalize Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav. This came after Yadav allegedly made politically charged remarks during the match. Pakistan cited violations of both the ICC Code of Conduct and MCC regulations.
In response, the ICC agreed to hold an inquiry into the September 14 incident. Officials confirmed that both Pycroft and Yadav will be investigated for their actions. However, Pycroft will still officiate the Super 4 match. This decision has raised questions about the ICC’s disciplinary process and its timing.
As tensions rise ahead of Sunday’s rematch, cricket fans await a heated yet fair contest. Both teams are under pressure to perform amid controversy. The spotlight remains not just on the players, but also on the match officials. The ICC’s handling of the issue will be closely watched throughout the tournament.
