PESHAWAR: Heavy rains and flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have caused widespread destruction, with 631 people losing their lives this year. According to a report from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the first nine months of 2023 saw devastating rainfall. In addition to the fatalities, 429 individuals were injured in rain-related incidents across the province.
The PDMA report revealed that the victims included 202 men, 190 women, and 239 children. Among the injured, there were 207 men, 86 women, and 145 children. The region’s livestock also suffered significant losses, with 7,153 animals dying in the floods and rains.
In terms of infrastructure, the rains caused severe damage to homes and schools in KP. The report stated that 3,798 homes were impacted, with 1,089 fully destroyed and 2,700 partially damaged. Additionally, 796 school buildings were affected, with 166 fully destroyed and 593 partially damaged.
The region experienced widespread devastation due to torrential rainfall, cloudbursts, and flash floods, particularly during the monsoon season. These disasters have brought immense hardship to the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with local communities struggling to recover from the devastation.
Authorities continue to assess the damage and provide support to the affected areas. However, the scale of the losses has highlighted the urgent need for disaster management and infrastructure resilience in flood-prone regions like KP.
