Elon Musk announced that social media platform X will open its new algorithm to the public in seven days. He said this will include all code for both organic and advertising post recommendations. Musk added that updates will be shared every four weeks with developer notes to explain changes.

Earlier this week, the European Commission extended a retention order sent to X last year. The order relates to algorithms and dissemination of illegal content. The extension now runs until the end of 2026, a spokesperson said.

In July 2025, Paris prosecutors investigated X for suspected algorithmic bias and fraudulent data extraction. Musk described this probe as a “politically-motivated criminal investigation.” He claimed it threatens users’ freedom of speech.

Last month, the European Union fined X 120 million euros, or about 140 million dollars. Regulators said X violated transparency rules under the Digital Services Act. The issues included the “blue checkmark” subscription and ad repository transparency.

The EU also criticized X for failing to provide researchers proper access to public data on the platform. Regulators stressed that this lack of transparency harms accountability and public trust.

In response to the fine, Musk publicly replied with an obscenity on a European Commission post. His reaction highlighted ongoing tension between X and EU regulators. The platform continues to face scrutiny over its operations and algorithms.

Musk’s announcement to open X’s algorithm aims to increase transparency. Analysts say this move may help the company address regulatory concerns and rebuild trust with users. However, questions remain about whether the step will satisfy EU authorities.
