US Board of Peace meeting

BRUSSELS: EU Commissioner Dubravka Šuica will travel to Washington this week to attend a meeting of the Board of Peace. The board was set up by US President Donald Trump. Šuica will participate in her capacity as an observer, not a full member. The EU Commission emphasized that the meeting reflects its commitment to ceasefire implementation and reconstruction in Gaza.

A spokesperson for the EU Commission, Guillaume Mercier, clarified that the EU is not joining the board as a member. He stated the participation focuses on supporting post-war recovery in Gaza. The move highlights the EU’s willingness to cooperate with international efforts. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was invited but will not attend the Thursday meeting. The EU aims to maintain a balanced and constructive role in peace efforts.

Another spokesperson, Anouar El Anouni, said the EU still has questions regarding the board’s charter. These include governance structures and compatibility with the UN Charter. Despite concerns, the EU is prepared to work with the US to implement the peace plan for Gaza. Participation as an observer allows the EU to contribute without committing to full membership. EU involvement remains cautious but constructive in the peace process.

While the EU institution will not join, two member states — Hungary and Bulgaria — took part in a signing ceremony in Davos last month. Italy has expressed interest in observer status but faces constitutional limits preventing full membership. Cyprus will also attend the Thursday meeting as an observer, according to government officials. These moves show selective engagement by EU countries in US-led initiatives. Coordination among European nations ensures alignment with international law and policy.

Šuica’s attendance follows diplomatic groundwork laid at the Munich Security Conference last week. The EU co-hosted meetings with France and Germany to coordinate recovery efforts in Gaza. The discussions involved European and Arab partners focused on early reconstruction strategies. The EU’s observer role reinforces its long-term commitment to peace and stability in the region. Officials hope the engagement will strengthen international cooperation for Gaza’s recovery.
