Iran is planning to impose tolls on vessels passing through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, according to state media reports, as the ongoing regional conflict continues to disrupt global energy flows.

A parliamentary commission has approved preliminary measures that include introducing “financial arrangements and rial-based toll systems” for ships transiting the narrow waterway. The proposal also emphasizes Iran’s sovereign authority over the strait and suggests coordination with Oman, which borders the opposite side of the passage.

The plan reportedly includes restrictions targeting the United States and Israel, barring their vessels from passing through, along with provisions aimed at countering countries that impose sanctions on Iran. Officials framed the move as part of broader efforts to assert control during the ongoing conflict in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital energy corridors, with roughly 20 percent of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through it under normal conditions. However, traffic through the waterway has dropped dramatically since the outbreak of hostilities, with maritime data indicating a decline of nearly 95 percent in vessel crossings.

This sharp reduction has already had a significant impact on global energy markets, contributing to volatility in oil prices and raising concerns over supply disruptions. Analysts warn that further restrictions, including tolls or selective bans, could intensify pressure on international trade and fuel costs.

The development highlights the growing economic dimension of the conflict, as countries in the region leverage strategic assets to strengthen their positions. Global powers are closely monitoring the situation, given the potential for prolonged disruptions to energy supplies and broader economic stability.
