Israel strikes Hezbollah in Lebanon

The Israeli military carried out air strikes against Hezbollah targets on Thursday. The attacks came after it issued evacuation orders for Sohmor village. The military said the strikes responded to Hezbollah’s repeated ceasefire violations. Residents were warned to leave certain areas before attacks began. Shortly after, Israel targeted other locations in southern Lebanon.

Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee also warned a second evacuation for Machghara village. He said the strikes aim to stop Hezbollah from reconstructing military activities. The army stressed it would target terrorist infrastructure in the near future. These operations follow weeks of heightened tension along the Israel-Lebanon border. The military claims its actions are defensive and necessary.

The strikes come a week after the Lebanese army said it disarmed Hezbollah south of the Litani River. This marked the first phase of a nationwide disarmament plan. However, Israel has called the efforts insufficient. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated the ceasefire requires full Hezbollah disarmament. Israel insists it will continue strikes until compliance is complete.

Lebanon has reported frequent Israeli attacks despite a November 2024 ceasefire. The National News Agency said strikes hit Jezzine, Mahmudiyeh, Al-Dimasqiyeh, and Al-Bureij last Sunday. These strikes included more than ten air attacks in southern Lebanon. The attacks reflect ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in the border region. Both sides remain on high alert.

Analysts say the situation highlights fragile security in southern Lebanon. Ceasefire agreements have failed to fully stop hostilities. Israel emphasizes its right to defend against Hezbollah threats. Meanwhile, Lebanon struggles to control militant activity in its south. The conflict continues to raise fears of a larger regional escalation.
