Karachi activates emergency plan ahead of rains
Authorities in Karachi have initiated comprehensive emergency measures in anticipation of forecast rainfall, aiming to minimize disruption and ensure public safety.
Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi has directed all deputy commissioners and relevant departments to remain on high alert. Instructions have been issued to municipal bodies, cantonment boards, the Water and Sewerage Corporation, health authorities, solid waste management teams, and K-Electric to ensure full preparedness for any rain-related emergencies.
Officials have been asked to submit detailed contingency plans to the commissioner’s office, outlining their readiness to respond to potential flooding, power outages, and other disruptions. A central rescue helpline, 1299, has also been activated to provide immediate assistance to residents.
In addition, control rooms have been set up across the city, with deputy commissioners instructed to establish dedicated help desks to facilitate public support during the expected weather spell. These steps are part of a coordinated strategy to improve response times and enhance communication between departments.
The measures come following a forecast by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, which has predicted widespread rain, wind, and thunderstorms across multiple regions of Pakistan from April 1 to April 4.In Sindh, cities including Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, and Sukkur are expected to experience rainfall and possible hailstorms between April 2 and April 4. Authorities have also warned of a drop in daytime temperatures.
Officials say these proactive measures are crucial to ensuring a swift and effective response, reducing risks to citizens, and maintaining essential services during the anticipated weather conditions.
