Karachi Breaks 41-Year Rainfall Record as Storm Claims 7 Lives

Karachi has witnessed an extraordinary weather event as the city recorded its highest rainfall in 41 years, breaking a long-standing record set in April 1985. The unexpected storm brought significant changes to the city’s climate and daily life.
According to the Meteorological Department, Karachi received 38.7 mm of rainfall within just 24 hours. This surpassed the previous record of 37 mm recorded on April 2, 1985, marking a historic moment in the city’s weather patterns.
The intense rainfall also caused a sharp drop in temperature. The minimum temperature was recorded at 16°C, which is approximately 5.8°C lower than the average April temperature of 21.8°C, giving residents a rare winter-like feeling.
However, the heavy rain also led to tragic incidents across the city. At least seven people lost their lives in various rain-related accidents, highlighting the risks associated with extreme weather conditions.
Most fatalities occurred due to electrocution incidents in different areas, including Gulistan-e-Johar, Surjani Town, PIB Colony, and near MA Jinnah Road. These incidents raise serious concerns about public safety and infrastructure.
In separate incidents, a rickshaw driver died after a wall collapsed in Old Golimar, while three children were injured in Orangi Town due to a similar wall collapse. The injured were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Meteorological Department stated that the current weather system is moving southeast, and its effects may continue in other parts of the country until April 4. Karachi is expected to experience partly cloudy weather with chances of light drizzle, with no major rainfall predicted.
