Kuwait extends smart water meter tender deadline

Kuwait has extended the deadline for companies to submit bids for a major smart water meter project aimed at modernizing the country’s water management system and supporting its broader digital transformation goals.

The country’s Central Agency for Public Tenders announced that the submission deadline for the project has been extended from June 21 to June 23, giving interested firms additional time to participate in the tender process.

The project, commissioned by the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, involves the supply, installation, operation and maintenance of smart water meters across residential areas in Kuwait.

Under the first phase of the initiative, approximately 300,000 conventional mechanical water meters will be replaced with advanced smart meters. Once bids are opened, the ministry will evaluate the submissions and is expected to issue a technical recommendation within 30 days before awarding the contract.

The smart meters are designed to automatically record and transmit water consumption data, eliminating the need for manual meter readings. Authorities believe the technology will improve efficiency, enhance billing accuracy and provide consumers with better visibility of their water usage.

In addition, the system is expected to help reduce water wastage by enabling the early detection of leaks and abnormal consumption patterns. Officials view the project as a key step toward improving resource management and strengthening the country’s utility infrastructure.

A specialized committee within the ministry developed the technical specifications for the project, ensuring that the smart meters can operate effectively in Kuwait’s harsh climate. The requirements include the ability to function in high-temperature environments and incorporate advanced technologies suited to local conditions.

The project is also linked to wider infrastructure upgrades, including efforts to expand fiber-optic connectivity between major electrical substations. Related works are currently underway in several residential districts as Kuwait continues to invest in modernizing its public utility networks.
