Imaan Mazari judicial remand

ISLAMABAD – An anti-terrorism court on Friday sent lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha to jail. The judicial remand was issued hours after their arrest in connection with a protest outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The couple faces allegations of manhandling the IHC Bar Association (IHCBA) president during the protest. The case was heard by ATC Judge Abu al-Hasanat Zulqarnain, who directed that both be kept in custody for 14 days.

Imaan and Hadi were arrested while traveling from the Islamabad High Court to the District Court near Serena Chowk. A large number of lawyers were accompanying them at the time, witnessing the arrests.

The couple has been involved in a controversial tweets case and has publicly vowed not to back down from their stance. Speaking to the media, they said they would maintain their position even if it meant going to jail.

Earlier, the Islamabad District and Sessions Court had ordered both to appear in person regarding the controversial tweets case. The IHC, in its written verdict, had declared the trial court’s order of not arresting them null and void.

The IHC granted four days to cross-examine witnesses, warning that failure to appear before the trial court would render the order void. Authorities emphasized that the couple must comply with the court directives to avoid further legal consequences.

The arrests and judicial remand have drawn significant attention from legal circles and the media, highlighting ongoing tensions over the controversial tweets case.
