Supreme Court Questions Necessity of Physical Remand for Sanam Javed in May 9 Case

ISLAMABAD: During a Supreme Court hearing related to the May 9, 2023, riots, Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, raised concerns over the necessity of physical remand for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activist Sanam Javed.
A three-member bench, led by the Chief Justice, was hearing the case when Justice Afridi enquired, “The accused is a woman; why is her physical remand required?”
Special Prosecutor Zulfiqar Naqvi informed the court that the Lahore High Court had already discharged Sanam Javed from the case during a previous hearing on her appeal challenging the remand order.
Taking note of the developments, the Supreme Court issued a notice to Sanam Javed and adjourned further proceedings.
Sanam Javed had earlier approached the Lahore High Court, contesting the legality of her physical remand in connection with the events of May 9, which led to widespread unrest across the country.
