Karachi gastro and diarrhoea cases surge

Hospitals across Karachi are reporting a sharp increase in gastroenteritis and diarrhoea cases as the city continues to face intense summer heat, with emergency departments witnessing a growing influx of patients suffering from stomach-related illnesses.

According to medical staff at major public hospitals, including Civil Hospital and Jinnah Hospital, hundreds of patients are arriving daily with symptoms such as stomach pain, vomiting, nausea and severe diarrhoea. Doctors at Civil Hospital said that more than 200 patients with gastrointestinal issues are being treated every day, while Jinnah Hospital is receiving over 150 similar cases daily.

Medical experts believe that the rise in cases is closely linked to extreme weather conditions combined with poor food hygiene practices. They have warned that improper storage and cooking of food, especially meat kept in freezers without adequate cooking, can significantly increase the risk of infections. Health professionals also noted that contaminated and unhygienic street food is contributing to the spread of gastroenteritis across the city.

Doctors have advised citizens to take extra precautions during the ongoing hot weather, recommending the consumption of fresh and properly cooked meals. They further urged people to store food at safe temperatures, keep it covered, and avoid eating from unhygienic sources. Clean drinking water and proper hand hygiene have also been highlighted as key preventive measures.

Hospital officials said that the situation is putting additional pressure on already burdened emergency departments, with doctors and paramedical staff working extended hours to manage the patient load.

Health experts have also warned that dehydration can quickly worsen conditions in hot weather, making timely treatment essential for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

Authorities have been urged to improve public awareness campaigns regarding food safety and hygiene to help control the growing number of cases across the metropolis.
