Mobile phone services have started to be suspended in Quetta as part of security arrangements ahead of the 7th of Muharram-ul-Haram, police officials confirmed on Monday.

According to police authorities, the suspension is being implemented due to security concerns linked to Muharram processions and gatherings across the provincial capital. Officials said the decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure law and order during religious events, particularly large public gatherings and mourning processions.

Residents in several parts of Quetta reported intermittent mobile network disruptions, while authorities indicated that the service suspension may continue in phases depending on the security situation and movement of processions. Law enforcement agencies have also intensified monitoring and deployed additional personnel across sensitive areas.

Muharram is observed with religious devotion across Pakistan, particularly by Shia Muslim communities, who hold processions, majalis, and other commemorative events to mark the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. Security measures are routinely heightened during this period to prevent any untoward incidents.

Meanwhile, in Bahawalpur, preparations are underway for religious processions on the 7th of Muharram, including 26 symbolic Alam and Zuljanah processions. A total of 61 majalis-e-aza are scheduled across the district to commemorate the sacrifices of the martyrs of Karbala.

A historic “mehndi” procession will also be taken out from Imam Bargah Syed Roshan Ali Shah in Mohalla Aam Khas at 4pm. Authorities have assured that comprehensive security arrangements are in place for all events, including deployment of police, traffic management plans, and monitoring teams to ensure peaceful observance of Muharram rituals.

Officials have urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and adhere to guidelines issued for public safety during the religious month.
