ISLAMABAD: NADRA has launched a new digital system to register births and deaths directly from hospitals and health centres. This system, developed with support from provincial governments, aims to make the process faster and more transparent. It follows instructions from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to improve registration services across the country. The project also aligns with the National Biometric and Registration Policy Framework, approved by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in January 2025. The system is currently in its trial phase, with a nationwide rollout planned soon.

Under this pilot project, NADRA has installed the system in over 50 hospitals and clinics across Pakistan. These include major facilities like PIMS and CDA hospitals in Islamabad and Lady Aitchison Hospital in Lahore. Hospitals in Quetta, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit, and Sindh are also part of the trial. As part of the system, hospitals automatically send birth and death reports to NADRA. Families then receive guidance via SMS and app notifications to complete registration at their local union council.

So far, 4,000 births and 407 deaths have been recorded through this automated system. The pilot has seen success in three districts of Punjab. NADRA plans to expand the project to more hospitals and basic health units in all provinces. The system helps reduce delays and errors common in the manual process. It also improves data accuracy for government records and services.

Citizens now have more ways to register births or deaths. They can either use NADRA’s mobile app or visit their nearest union council office. This new method reduces the burden on families during important life events. It also ensures timely registration, which is crucial for accessing public services and legal documentation. The move reflects Pakistan’s broader push toward digital governance and public sector reform.

NADRA is working closely with all provincial governments to expand the service across the country. The goal is to bring this modern system to every government and private hospital. Once fully implemented, every birth and death in Pakistan will be recorded digitally and more efficiently. This marks a major step toward a connected, transparent, and responsive registration system.
