Pakistan pushes diplomacy amid expected Iran US talks

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephonic conversation with Antonio Costa to discuss regional developments and anticipated talks between Iran and the United States, expected to be hosted in Islamabad.
According to an official statement, both leaders expressed hope for progress in diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between Tehran and Washington. The prime minister briefed Costa on Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue and bringing both sides closer to negotiations.
Costa appreciated Pakistan’s constructive engagement and said the European Union supports efforts to promote stability. He noted that the global community is closely watching developments and hopes the talks will lead to a breakthrough, helping stabilise the region and secure vital maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to diplomacy as the preferred means of resolving conflicts and thanked EU leadership for its support. Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as the situation evolves.
Separately, the prime minister chaired a high-level meeting attended by senior officials, including Ishaq Dar and Mohsin Naqvi, to review Pakistan’s diplomatic posture. Participants assessed challenges, including Iran’s reported reluctance to join the next round of talks.
Officials said Pakistan remains committed to ensuring continued dialogue and will intensify efforts to persuade Iran to re-engage. Dar also spoke with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, stressing the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement.
Analysts say Pakistan’s role as a mediator highlights its growing diplomatic relevance, with the success of upcoming talks potentially shaping regional stability and global economic conditions.
