Pakistan Extends Airspace Ban on Indian Airlines Again

Pakistan has extended the closure of its airspace to Indian airlines for an additional month, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The Pakistan Airports Authority issued a new Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) with government approval. The restriction now remains in place until January 27, 2026. This extension affects commercial passenger planes, military aircraft, and private jets registered in India. Authorities said the move continues the previous ban, highlighting Pakistan’s strict airspace control regarding Indian carriers.
The airspace ban was first imposed on April 23, 2025, causing major financial losses for Indian airlines. Industry sources reported billions of rupees lost due to canceled flights and rerouted routes. Airlines have had to operate longer routes through third countries. The extension adds to the ongoing operational and financial challenges for Indian carriers. Experts say this disruption affects passengers, cargo transport, and regional trade.
Officials emphasized that the decision reflects Pakistan’s caution over civil and military air traffic from India. They stated that safety and national security considerations remain the priority. Government authorities said the extension is a preventive measure amid ongoing diplomatic tensions. The ban is part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to monitor cross-border air movements. Analysts believe it also signals the country’s firm stance in regional diplomacy.
The move comes amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. Both countries have a history of disputes over borders and security issues. Civil aviation officials continue to coordinate on alternative routes and schedules. Passengers traveling between the two countries are advised to check flight updates. Airlines are also adjusting ticketing and logistics to reduce inconvenience.
Industry observers noted that the extension may affect international flights connecting India and other regions. The ban impacts both passenger and cargo operations, increasing travel time and costs. Diplomatic officials from both countries continue discussions to resolve aviation issues. Meanwhile, authorities urge patience and cooperation from travelers and airlines. The airspace closure remains a sensitive issue in Indo-Pak relations.

According to the official statement, the ban applies to all Indian-registered, operated, owned, or leased aircraft, including commercial and military flights. No Indian airline or operator will be permitted to use Pakistani airspace during this period.
The decision follows the May 23 National Security Committee meeting, where it was agreed to maintain the airspace closure in response to India’s continued aggressive posturing.
