In an emergency session convened following Israel’s latest air strikes on Iran, Pakistan has called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take immediate action to stop what it described as Israeli aggression and to hold Tel Aviv accountable under international law.

Speaking during the meeting, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, condemned the Israeli strikes, labelling them as “unjustified and illegitimate”. He urged the 15-member Council to prevent Israel from acting with impunity in defiance of global norms.

“This Council must deny Israel the free hand and the impunity with which it continues to operate in defiance of international law and international opinion,” said Ambassador Ahmad.

Referring to Article 51 of the UN Charter, which permits nations to defend themselves against armed attacks, the ambassador asserted that Iran had the right to respond in self-defence.

The Pakistani envoy also highlighted a broader pattern of Israeli military actions across the region, citing operations in Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen as examples of Tel Aviv’s “unilateral militarism”.

While council members offered varied perspectives on the unfolding situation, most agreed that urgent steps are needed to de-escalate tensions. Diplomats from multiple countries emphasised the importance of restraint and dialogue to prevent further conflict in an already volatile region.
