Toshakhana-II Case Against Imran Khan Nears Final Stage as Prosecution Closes Arguments

The Toshakhana-II case against former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi has reached its final stage. On Monday, the prosecution completed recording statements from its last two witnesses. These included NAB’s Investigating Officer Mohsin Haroon and FIA’s Investigating Officer Shahid Pervaiz. The defense will cross-examine both officers on September 24. So far, statements from 20 witnesses have been recorded, with cross-examination completed for 18.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi appeared in court during the hearing. Also present were Imran Khan’s three sisters and Bushra Bibi’s sister-in-law, Mehrunissa. The defense team included Arshad Tabraiz, Zaheer Abbas, and Barrister Ali Zafar. Meanwhile, Federal Prosecutor Zulfiqar Abbas Naqvi and Barrister Umair Majeed represented the prosecution. The hearing was held inside Adiala Jail by Special Central Judge Shahrukh Arjumand. The court adjourned the case until September 24.

Earlier, Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi filed applications in the Islamabad High Court (IHC). They requested an early hearing for their acquittal pleas in the Toshakhana-II case. The petitioners highlighted that the last hearing was on January 28 and no progress had occurred since. They said their applications have been pending for over two months. The couple’s lawyers argued that the case was based on malice.

The Toshakhana case involves allegations that Imran Khan failed to disclose details of gifts he kept from the Toshakhana during his premiership. Lawmakers from the ruling coalition filed the reference last year. The issue intensified after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified Imran Khan for false statements. The ECP ruled he engaged in corrupt practices and submitted incorrect declarations. This disqualification ended his membership in the National Assembly.

Following the disqualification, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) began investigating Imran Khan. The ECP’s decision stated that Imran Khan did not declare cash and bank details linked to the gifts. The commission described his disqualification under Article 63, 1(P), citing his false statements. The ongoing case continues to attract major political attention and remains a critical test of Pakistan’s accountability system.
