UN to Vote on US Gaza Peace Plan Resolution

The UN Security Council is set to vote on Monday on a US-drafted resolution supporting Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan. The plan aims to bring stability to the war-torn Gaza Strip and strengthen a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The draft resolution endorses the creation of an International Stabilization Force (ISF) to assist in securing Gaza’s borders and demilitarizing the region. It also proposes the formation of a transitional governing body for Gaza, known as the “Board of Peace,” which Trump would potentially lead.
The draft includes plans for the permanent disarmament of non-state armed groups, civilian protection, and securing humanitarian corridors. Notably, it hints at a future Palestinian state, contingent upon reforms by the Palestinian Authority and the reconstruction of Gaza. This marks a shift from previous drafts, which did not address Palestinian statehood directly.
However, Russia has proposed a competing draft, calling for stronger support for the two-state solution. Russia’s version opposes the deployment of an international force and the establishment of the Board of Peace. Instead, it urges UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to explore alternative options for peacekeeping.
The US has intensified efforts to rally support for its resolution, criticizing attempts to create divisions among Council members. The US ambassador, Mike Waltz, warned that rejecting the resolution would mean supporting Hamas or risking renewed conflict. The draft has the backing of several Arab and Muslim-majority nations, including Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
Despite Russian opposition, many diplomats expect the US resolution to pass, though some doubt its effectiveness. Experts suggest that Russia and China may abstain from voting but remain skeptical about the plan’s execution.
