Electricity Prices May Rise Due to Fuel Adjustment

Electricity prices in Pakistan may increase again due to the monthly fuel price adjustment electricity, as power sector authorities move forward with a new request. The possible rise could add pressure on consumers already facing high utility bills amid inflation and rising energy costs.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). This request is related to the fuel price adjustment for the month of December, which is reviewed on a monthly basis.
According to the application, a total of 8.487 billion units of electricity were generated during December. Out of this, 8.208 billion units were supplied to distribution companies across the country to meet consumer demand.

The CPPA also stated that the average cost of electricity generation during the month was Rs 9.62 per unit. Any approved adjustment by NEPRA may directly affect electricity bills paid by consumers in the coming months.
NEPRA is scheduled to hold a hearing on January 29 to review the request. After the hearing, a final decision will be announced, which could lead to higher power tariffs under the monthly fuel price adjustment electricity policy.
