Google has introduced a new feature that merges its AI Overviews with AI Mode in Search. This change comes as competition between AI models intensifies. The new feature allows users to start with basic AI-generated information and then seamlessly ask follow-up questions using a conversational interface. The goal is to create a more natural, deeper exploration of topics without switching modes.
Previously, users had to decide if they wanted to engage in a conversation with AI. For simple questions, the standard search box was enough. However, for more complex queries or follow-ups, users needed to switch to AI Mode. With the new update, users can now ask follow-up questions directly from the Search results page, making the experience more intuitive.
Google’s AI Mode, which launched in the U.S. in May and globally in August, uses the company’s Gemini AI. This feature provides a conversational experience similar to ChatGPT, enabling back-and-forth chats. Now, users can ask detailed questions without having to toggle between different modes, streamlining the process of seeking information.
The update is currently being rolled out globally, but it is available only on mobile devices for now. This move comes as OpenAI, a major competitor, focuses on improving its own chatbot features. Google hopes that merging AI Overviews with AI Mode will give Gemini an edge in user adoption. Gemini now boasts over 650 million monthly users, while AI Overviews have 2 billion users.
Robby Stein, Google’s VP of Product for Search, emphasized that the new feature removes the need for users to decide where or how to ask questions. The combined AI Overviews and AI Mode feature offers a more seamless, conversational approach to search. Google’s vision is to allow users to ask any question, no matter how complex, and get precise answers with ease.
