Suspends Visa Exemption

Iran has announced the suspension of its visa exemption policy for Indian tourists. Starting November 22, Indian nationals will no longer be able to enter or transit through Iran without a visa. The Iranian embassy in New Delhi confirmed the change on its official X account, stating that the rule applies to all Indian nationals with ordinary passports.

This decision reverses an earlier announcement made in February 2024, when Iran allowed Indian tourists to enter visa-free for up to 15 days every six months. The suspension of the visa exemption is expected to impact many Indian travelers, particularly those visiting popular religious sites like Qom and Mashhad, as well as pilgrims heading to Iraq.

The new policy also affects Indians using Iran as a transit hub for Europe or Central Asia. Many travelers, including Shia pilgrims from Indian-administered Kashmir, have used Iran’s accessibility for their trips. The change in visa rules will likely complicate travel for these groups.

While the Iranian government has not provided a specific reason for the suspension, reports suggest the decision follows recent incidents where individuals were misled into traveling to Iran through fake job offers. These individuals were then sent to a third country, raising concerns over potential human trafficking.

The change is likely to disrupt the travel plans of many Indians, as the relaxed visa policy had previously made travel to Iran easier. The new requirements will affect both tourists and those in transit, who must now secure a visa in advance to visit the Islamic Republic.
