Sindh’s Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that efforts are underway to restart work on the Red Line transport project within the next 48 hours, following delays caused by contractor-related issues and performance concerns.

Speaking on a television programme, the minister stated that the Red Line project is the only infrastructure initiative currently causing public inconvenience due to construction disruptions. He explained that the provincial government had repeatedly warned contractors responsible for different project segments, referred to as Lot-1 and Lot-2, to ensure timely and quality work. However, due to continued dissatisfaction with performance—particularly from Lot-2—the contract was eventually terminated.

Memon said the decision was taken in consultation with the Asian Development Bank, which is also involved in supporting the project. He added that the government remains committed to completing the corridor as soon as possible to improve urban transport in the city.

According to him, new arrangements are being finalised to resume construction work swiftly. The aim is to minimise further delays and restore progress on the mass transit project, which is considered important for easing traffic congestion and improving public transportation in Karachi.

The minister also provided updates on other infrastructure developments, stating that work on Shahrah-e-Bhutto is progressing satisfactorily. He announced that the road is expected to be fully opened to the public next month, which would significantly improve connectivity in the region.

Officials maintain that despite delays, the government is prioritising completion of major transport infrastructure projects to address long-standing mobility challenges in the province. The Red Line project, once completed, is expected to become a key component of Karachi’s public transport system.
