KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA – The provincial Home Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has imposed a ban on illegal gold mining along the Kabul, Swat, and Indus rivers. The decision follows a directive from the provincial cabinet to protect river ecosystems. Officials said the ban will initially last for 60 days. Authorities aim to curb environmental damage caused by unlawful mining. The measure reflects growing concern over public safety and ecological preservation.

Deputy commissioners in Swabi, Swat, Nowshera, Kohat, and Karak districts have been directed to enforce the ban immediately. They are responsible for monitoring riverbanks and stopping illegal mining operations. Officials emphasized coordination between local administrations and law enforcement agencies. Residents were advised to report illegal activities along riverbanks. Authorities warned that non-compliance would result in strict action.

The government highlighted environmental risks linked to unlawful mining. Excavation along riverbanks accelerates land erosion and pollutes water. Such practices threaten aquatic life and reduce water quality. Officials said public safety could be jeopardized if mining continues unchecked. Environmentalists welcomed the ban as a positive step for river conservation.

Legal experts confirmed that penalties could include fines and imprisonment.

the Home Department said the ban may be extended if illegal mining persists. Authorities will continue monitoring riverbanks during the 60-day period. Public awareness campaigns are planned to educate communities about environmental protection. Officials urged local populations to cooperate for sustainable river management. The government aims to preserve natural resources while maintaining law and order.
