Pakistan aims for clean energy, says Awais Leghari

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has set new clean energy targets as part of its plan to reform the power sector. Minister for Energy Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari announced the targets during a recent meeting. He said the government is committed to reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Clean and sustainable energy sources are now a top priority for future development.

The minister also revealed major reforms in energy distribution. Independent boards are being introduced in power distribution companies. These boards will improve governance and ensure professional oversight. Leghari stressed the need for accountability and better performance. He added that the government is considering privatizing distribution companies to boost efficiency.

In just one year, Pakistan has cut energy distribution losses by one-third. Leghari said this progress shows the reforms are working. He believes further improvements will follow with the help of privatization. These steps are expected to strengthen the overall power sector. The government hopes to attract private investment through these changes.

Speaking to an Asian Development Bank delegation, Leghari highlighted Pakistan’s push toward clean energy. A new tariff for electric vehicles has already been introduced. The government is also seeking international support to improve grids and metering systems. These upgrades are key to meeting the country’s clean energy goals.

Pakistan has already shut down 2,800 MW of fossil fuel plants ahead of schedule. This move supports its environmental responsibilities. The country now aims to access green financing and carbon credits. With bold reforms and global partnerships, Pakistan is working to build a cleaner, more reliable energy future.
