Pakistan freelancers earn $1.6bn in 11 months

Pakistan’s freelance sector has achieved a major milestone, generating $1.6 billion in export earnings during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year, reflecting the country’s growing presence in the global digital economy.
According to the latest figures, freelance export revenues recorded an impressive 80 percent increase compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. The strong performance highlights the expanding role of Pakistani freelancers in international markets and the increasing demand for digital services provided by the country’s skilled workforce.
The data shows that freelance earnings reached $169 million in May 2026 alone. On a year-on-year basis, export income from freelancing surged by 87 percent during the month, demonstrating sustained growth across various online service sectors.
Industry observers say the remarkable rise in freelance exports is being driven by increasing participation in technology-related fields, including software development, graphic design, digital marketing, content creation, virtual assistance, and e-commerce services. Improved internet access, digital skills training, and growing awareness of remote work opportunities have also contributed to the sector’s expansion.
Pakistan has emerged as one of the leading freelance markets in the region, with thousands of professionals offering services to clients across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and other international destinations. The sector has become an important source of foreign exchange earnings and employment opportunities, particularly for young professionals.
Experts believe the continued growth of freelancing can further strengthen Pakistan’s digital economy if supported through favorable policies, improved payment solutions, and enhanced access to global platforms. They also emphasize the need for greater investment in technology education and digital infrastructure to maintain the sector’s momentum.
The latest figures underscore the increasing contribution of freelancers to Pakistan’s economy and highlight the potential of digital exports as a key driver of future economic growth and foreign exchange earnings.
