Two Pakistani Muslims achieved a historic political milestone in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Their election highlights growing diversity and inclusion in local American politics.

Sumbul Siddiqui, a Karachi-born lawyer, was elected mayor for the 2026–27 term. Her victory marks her third time holding the mayor’s office in Cambridge.

Notably, Siddiqui remains the first Muslim and Asian woman to serve as mayor. Her re-election reaffirms strong public trust in her leadership and experience.

Meanwhile, Burhan Azim was elected deputy mayor of Cambridge. He is an MIT-trained engineer originally from Burewala, Pakistan.

Importantly, Azim became the youngest city councillor in Cambridge’s history. His election reflects rising youth participation in local governance.

Previously, Siddiqui was first elected to the city council in 2017. She earlier served two successful mayoral terms before this new election.

Overall, both victories are being widely celebrated by Pakistani-Americans nationwide. They mark a significant step forward for representation in American public life.
