Parliament Passes Gul Plaza Resolution and Key Bills

ISLAMABAD: A joint session of Parliament passed a unanimous resolution on the Gul Plaza tragedy with full government and opposition support. The session also approved several controversial bills despite strong opposition protests and objections from the President.
The session, chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, began 35 minutes late. Lawmakers discussed multiple legislative matters. Opposition members raised slogans and surrounded the speaker’s dais in protest during proceedings.
The President’s objections on the Danish Schools Authority Bill and the Domestic Violence Bill were read in the House. Concerns included provincial consultation and ambiguity in proposed punishments.
The National Commission for Human Rights (Amendment) Bill 2025 was presented by Federal Minister Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry. PPP’s Shazia Marri proposed amendments supported by the government. JUI amendments were rejected, and the bill was passed.

The Danish Schools Authority Bill 2025 faced protests from opposition lawmakers. Despite loud objections and sloganeering, the bill was approved. It establishes an authority to manage Danish Schools in Islamabad and prioritize education for low-income children.
The Domestic Violence Prevention and Protection Bill 2025 was also passed. Amendments proposed by JUI members were rejected. The law now includes protections for men as well. Opposition protests subsided during the approval process.
MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar presented the unanimous resolution on the Gul Plaza tragedy. The resolution offered prayers for the victims, demanded improved fire safety, and called for compensation. Parliament adjourned after completing its legislative agenda.
