Pakistan astronaut selection 2026

Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has reached a major milestone in its Human Spaceflight Programme. The agency successfully completed the secondary phase of astronaut candidate selection. This achievement follows a rigorous initial screening process conducted in Pakistan. SUPARCO said it aims to strengthen Pakistan’s role in international human spaceflight initiatives.

Two candidates have been shortlisted after comprehensive assessments in China. They underwent medical, psychological, and aptitude tests at the Astronauts Centre of China (ACC). The tests were conducted according to international human spaceflight standards. Experts confirmed both candidates demonstrated exceptional skills and readiness for advanced astronaut training.

The shortlisted candidates will now undergo six months of advanced astronaut training at ACC. Training includes technical, operational, and physical preparation for spaceflight missions. Upon completion, one candidate will be selected for a mission aboard the Chinese Space Station (CSS). The spaceflight is scheduled for October or November 2026.

This cooperation stems from the bilateral “Astronaut Cooperation Agreement” signed in February 2025. The agreement was strongly supported by Pakistan’s Prime Minister, whose vision enabled the country’s space ambitions. SUPARCO emphasized that political leadership played a key role in achieving this historic milestone.

The initiative also highlights China’s support for Pakistan in human spaceflight. Pakistan became the first foreign partner in China’s astronaut program. Officials say the program will boost scientific collaboration and inspire youth in space research. This mission marks a landmark step for Pakistan’s presence in the global space community.
