U.S. and Ukraine Demand Sovereignty in Peace Talks

U.S. and Ukraine

Washington and Kyiv emphasized that any peace deal to end the war with Russia must uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty. The statement followed “constructive” talks between U.S., Ukrainian, and European officials in Geneva. After a day of discussions, negotiators drafted an updated peace framework, addressing key points from a U.S. proposal that Ukraine had criticized for favoring Russia. The peace plan, initially presented by U.S. President Donald Trump, included tough demands on Ukraine, such as ceding territory and not joining NATO.

During the talks, Ukraine pushed for changes to a 28-point plan that included hardline Russian demands. Both sides agreed that any future deal must fully protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and ensure lasting peace. The discussions were described as focused, constructive, and respectful, marking meaningful progress. U.S. officials expressed optimism, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio claiming significant steps forward. Ukrainian officials also reported good progress, particularly in narrowing the differences.

Despite the positive talks, a Russian drone strike on Kharkiv killed four civilians, underscoring the challenges of reaching a peaceful resolution. The attack highlighted the continued violence on the ground, even as negotiations advanced. Kharkiv’s mayor condemned the attack, calling it “horrible” that Russian forces were targeting civilians despite peace efforts. These actions emphasized the urgency of a comprehensive agreement to stop the ongoing violence.

U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators remain hopeful that the issues still open for discussion are “not insurmountable.” Rubio suggested that an agreement could soon be reached, but emphasized that the final deal must be approved by the presidents. The U.S. is working to bring the Kremlin into the conversation, with Russia having welcomed the original proposal. However, tensions remain as Ukraine seeks to assert its autonomy in the peace process, which has been largely shaped by U.S. leadership without European input.

European leaders, including EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, voiced their concerns over Ukraine’s sovereignty in the peace discussions. She stressed that any deal must reflect Ukraine’s right to choose its own future, with full EU involvement. Meanwhile, President Trump criticized Ukraine’s leadership for lacking gratitude toward U.S. efforts. In response, Ukrainian President Zelensky thanked the U.S. for its ongoing support, which he said was saving lives. The situation remains tense, with the future of the peace talks dependent on overcoming key obstacles.
