Government plans to upgrade Pakistan maritime academy to degree-awarding status

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has announced that the Pakistan Maritime Academy will be upgraded to a degree-awarding institution as part of broader efforts to modernise the country’s maritime training infrastructure.
The announcement came during his visit to the Pakistan Maritime Academy, where he reviewed ongoing training programmes and institutional development initiatives. The minister said that a bill in this regard will soon be presented in the National Assembly to formalise the academy’s new academic status.
He stated that reforms are already underway to align the academy with modern educational and professional standards. According to him, the objective is to transform the institution into a centre of excellence that meets international maritime training requirements and supports Pakistan’s growing blue economy needs.
During the visit, Acting Commandant Muhammad Asif Farooq briefed the minister on the academy’s training activities and operational structure. He informed that specialised fire-fighting training has been provided to port personnel, along with other skill development programmes designed to improve safety and operational efficiency in maritime operations.
The minister expressed satisfaction over the quality of training being offered and appreciated the efforts of the academy’s administration in maintaining professional standards. He emphasised the importance of equipping maritime personnel with advanced technical skills to meet global industry demands.
Officials said the proposed upgrade is expected to enhance the academic credibility of the institution and expand opportunities for students pursuing maritime education and careers. It is also seen as part of a broader strategy to strengthen Pakistan’s shipping, port management, and marine logistics capabilities.
Further details regarding the legislative process and implementation timeline are expected once the bill is formally introduced in parliament.
