Pakistan Peoples Party leader Amjad Hussain Advocate has been elected unopposed as the new Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan. The announcement was made during a session of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, making him the fifth chief minister of the region. The election of Amjad Hussain as Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister marks a significant political development in the area.
The assembly session was chaired by Speaker Imran Nadeem, who officially declared Amjad Hussain’s victory. No other candidate submitted nomination papers for the chief minister’s position, and all members present in the house extended their support to him.
Amjad Hussain was elected from the GBA-1 Gilgit constituency in the recent elections and currently serves as president of the Pakistan Peoples Party in Gilgit-Baltistan. He previously served as a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council from 2010 to 2015 and won seats from two constituencies in the 2020 elections.
Earlier, PPP’s Imran Nadeem was elected unopposed as Speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, while Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Kifayat ur Rehman Advocate was elected unopposed as Deputy Speaker. The developments reflect a broad political understanding among several parties in the assembly.
Meanwhile, on the request of opposition members, Speaker Imran Nadeem declared PML-N Gilgit-Baltistan President Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman as the Leader of the Opposition. The date for the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected chief minister will be announced later. The election of Amjad Hussain as Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister is being viewed as the beginning of a new phase in the region’s political leadership.
