KARACHI: The Sindh government on Monday announced public holidays across the province on June 25 and 26, 2026, in observance of Ashura, which falls on Muharram 9 and 10, 1448 A.H.

According to an official notification issued by the office of the Chief Secretary and shared by the Sindh Information Department, all government offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under the administrative control of the Sindh government will remain closed during the two days.

The notification clarified that essential services will continue to operate as usual.

Ashura is one of the most significant occasions in the Islamic calendar and is observed with deep reverence, particularly by Shia Muslims around the world. The day commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Husain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), and his companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.

During Muharram, mourning gatherings, religious processions, and majalis are held across Pakistan to pay tribute to the sacrifices made at Karbala. Authorities typically implement special security arrangements, traffic management plans, and emergency measures to ensure the peaceful conduct of processions and religious events.

The announcement of public holidays allows citizens to participate in religious observances and commemorative activities associated with Muharram 9 and 10.

Provincial officials have urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and follow traffic advisories issued for Ashura processions.

Further details regarding security arrangements, procession routes, and public service schedules are expected to be released by the relevant district administrations ahead of Ashura.
