British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party, marking a significant development in British politics.

Speaking during a press briefing at 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he had decided to step down from the party leadership in response to the wishes of party members and ongoing concerns about the party’s future direction.

He stated that critics had repeatedly claimed that the Labour Party had weakened and lost momentum. “I am resigning from the party leadership in accordance with the wishes of the party,” he said, adding that he had spoken with King Charles III earlier in the day regarding the transition process.

Starmer confirmed that he would remain in office until the Labour Party completes the process of selecting a new leader. He pledged full cooperation with his successor and said he would work to ensure an orderly and smooth transfer of power.

The British prime minister emphasized that stability and continuity in government remain important priorities during the leadership transition. He added that he would support the incoming leader in every possible way to facilitate a seamless handover.

Starmer came to power after leading the Labour Party to a decisive victory in the July 2024 general election. The win returned Labour to government after 14 years in opposition and brought an end to the long period of rule by the Conservative Party.

The 2024 election was widely viewed as a historic breakthrough for Labour, giving the party a strong parliamentary mandate. With Starmer’s resignation, attention now turns to the upcoming leadership contest and the future direction of the party and government.

His departure also makes him the sixth British prime minister to leave office within the past decade, highlighting the political volatility that has characterized recent years in the United Kingdom.
