Australia halve fuel tax

Anthony Albanese has announced a temporary reduction in fuel tax as Australia responds to rising petrol prices linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Following discussions with state and territory leaders, the government confirmed that the existing fuel excise—currently set at 52 cents per litre will be reduced by half for a period of three months. The move is designed to provide immediate financial relief to households and businesses facing higher transportation costs.

Albanese stated that the decision reflects growing pressure on consumers, noting that many Australians are struggling with increased living expenses. Officials estimate the policy will cost the government approximately $1.75 billion, highlighting the scale of the intervention.

Authorities have also sought to reassure the public that fuel supplies remain stable overall. While shortages have been reported in some rural areas, these are believed to be caused by panic buying and logistical challenges rather than a lack of incoming shipments.

At the state level, additional measures have been introduced to reduce demand. In regions such as Victoria and Tasmania, public transport has been made temporarily free to encourage commuters to limit fuel use. The federal government has also urged citizens to reduce non-essential travel where possible.

Meanwhile, Chris Minns reported that several petrol stations in New South Wales have run out of fuel, particularly in regional communities. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and may introduce further measures if conditions worsen.

In addition, legislation has been introduced to support fuel imports by allowing the government to secure additional shipments. Recent data indicates Australia holds just over a month’s supply of petrol and diesel.

The steps aim to stabilize supply and ease the financial burden on consumers during a period of global uncertainty.
