Peshawar: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has expressed support for introducing a presidential system in Pakistan, following his earlier endorsement of the controversial Kalabagh Dam project.

In an informal conversation with senior journalists, Gandapur said that the country needs a presidential form of governance, adding that the founder of PTI is also a strong proponent of the system.“If he runs for president, he will win from across the country,” Gandapur claimed.

He also voiced support for the creation of new provinces, stating that smaller administrative units would lead to better governance. Pakistan is the only country of this population size being run with just four provinces. “Globally, nations are moving toward decentralisation,” he said.

On the issue of the Kalabagh Dam, the chief minister said that only the ANP (Awami National Party) opposes the project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Those who say the dam will be built over our dead bodies are politicising the issue. “I believe the state should be prioritised over politics,” he asserted.

Speaking on political accountability, Gandapur said:“Only those who have done wrong need to apologise. Those who stole our mandate and oppressed us are the ones who should seek forgiveness.”
