Green Line Project in Karachi

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited the Green Line Common Corridor near Radio Pakistan on Monday for an inspection. He was accompanied by Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, opposition leader Ali Khurshidi, MQM leader Amin ul Haq, and federal government spokesperson Raja Khaleeq uz Zaman. Officials from the Pakistan International Development Company Limited (PIDCL) also attended the visit.

Raja Khaleeq uz Zaman updated the group on the project’s progress, stating that 21 kilometers of the Green Line were now fully functional. He added that the extension phase was currently under construction. The mayor had suspended work on the project in September due to concerns, but these issues have now been addressed.

Mayor Wahab clarified that the suspension was aimed at improving the project for public benefit. He acknowledged that citizens face temporary difficulties but emphasized that the Green Line will be fully completed by October 31, 2026. The mayor also noted that issues related to the Red Line have been resolved, allowing the Green Line to function as a common corridor.

Earlier, the mayor called on PIDCL to provide a clear timeline for the completion of both the Green and Red Line projects. He stressed that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) must ensure the projects meet the specified deadlines. Wahab also mentioned that the No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued in 2017 had not been fully implemented, causing significant inconvenience to the public.

The Green Line project, once completed, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve transportation options in Karachi. The mayor’s inspection reflects his commitment to ensuring the timely and efficient execution of these key urban projects.

SAO PAULO, Brazil — Brazil has recorded its largest annual decrease in greenhouse gas emissions since 2009, according to recent data. The country’s emissions fell by 16.7% in 2023 compared to the previous year, marking a significant environmental milestone. The reduction is attributed to successful government actions under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, particularly in combatting deforestation.

Brazil’s Climate Observatory, a network of environmental NGOs, highlighted the sharp drop in emissions, citing the return of government control over deforestation. The government’s efforts stand in stark contrast to the previous administration, which saw a rise in illegal logging, especially in the Amazon rainforest. Lula, who assumed office in January 2023, has made significant strides in reversing environmental damage from his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro.
