Pakistan shortens passport delivery time to 14 days

The government of Pakistan has reduced the processing time for issuing a normal passport from 21 days to 14 days, aiming to improve public service delivery and ease access for citizens. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Minister of State Talal Chaudhry, along with senior officials from the interior ministry and passport department.
Officials said the move is part of broader reforms to modernise the passport system and make it more efficient. By shortening the delivery timeline, authorities hope to address long-standing complaints about delays and provide timely documentation to applicants, particularly those needing passports for urgent travel or employment purposes.
In addition to faster processing, the government has also decided to introduce a fully cashless payment system at passport offices across the country. The transition is expected to be completed within 15 days. Authorities believe that eliminating cash transactions will help curb corruption, reduce the role of middlemen or agents, and ensure greater transparency in the process.

Another key initiative discussed in the meeting was the improvement of home delivery services for passports. The government plans to make doorstep delivery more effective so citizens can receive their passports without unnecessary visits to offices.
The interior minister also directed officials to expedite work on the proposed “business passport” system, which is intended to facilitate frequent travelers and business professionals. This initiative is expected to further streamline documentation procedures and support economic activity.
Overall, these measures reflect the government’s efforts to enhance public convenience, digitise services, and build trust in administrative systems. Authorities say more reforms may follow as part of a wider plan to improve citizen-focused services across departments.
