Hundreds of protesters marched peacefully along Copacabana Beach on Saturday, voicing solidarity with Palestinians ahead of the G20 summit in the city.
Under heavy rain and close security surveillance, demonstrators carried Palestinian flags and banners, including calls to “Break Brazil-Israel Relations” and end military funding to Israel.
Tania Arantes, representing a Brazilian union, said the protest aimed to contrast the G20 summit’s focus on global economic policies with climate change, poverty, and taxing the super-rich.
Giancarlo Pereira, a participant, linked the Palestinian cause to broader anti-capitalist concerns, saying, “The billionaires of the world run the corporations fuelling wars.”
World leaders, including US President Joe Biden and China’s Xi Jinping, are set to discuss global coordination during the summit on Monday and Tuesday.
