Islamabad: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced on Monday that 25,000 virtual private networks (VPNs) have been registered in the country as part of ongoing efforts to regulate internet access. The announcement was made during a Senate Standing Committee on IT meeting, chaired by Palwasha Khan.

PTA Chairman highlighted the authority’s two-year effort to streamline VPN regulations, stating, “Registered VPNs ensure uninterrupted internet access without compromising privacy.”

The meeting, however, was marked by criticism and concern. Senator Muhammad Humayun strongly opposed measures that restrict online platforms, such as X (formerly Twitter), arguing that such policies are detrimental to Pakistan’s IT sector and freelance community.

“Shutting down platforms jeopardises the livelihoods of over 2.5 million individuals, including freelancers and small businesses,” he said, urging the government to reconsider its approach to internet governance.

The committee also expressed frustration over the absence of the Minister of State for IT, marking their non-attendance for the third consecutive session. In response, the committee summoned the Interior Secretary to the next meeting for further discussions on the matter.

The regulation of VPNs is part of broader government initiatives aimed at addressing cybersecurity and internet usage concerns. However, critics argue that these measures could stifle digital innovation and economic growth in Pakistan’s burgeoning IT sector.

The PTA emphasised that its focus remains on ensuring secure and reliable internet access while addressing privacy concerns, amid calls for balancing regulatory oversight with the needs of the IT industry.
