Punjab government to launch tram service in Lahore by February 2026

Lahore: The Punjab government has announced the launch of a tram service in Lahore, expected to begin operations in February 2026, running from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura.
According to Transport Minister Bilal Akbar, the tram trial was successful. The trams will have a seating capacity of 270 passengers, with the project estimated to cost $3 million. Officials from NESPAK and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMA) have also visited China for technical collaboration.
The minister further revealed that metro train projects have also been approved for Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The Faisalabad metro will cost $110 million and is expected to serve 300,000 passengers daily, while the Gujranwala metro will cost $50 million and accommodate 140,000 passengers per day.
Bilal Akbar emphasised that these transport projects will play a key role in tackling rising air pollution in Lahore and improving urban mobility across Punjab.
