Sri Lankan President Reappoints Harini Amarasuriya as Prime Minister After Election Win

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake reappointed Harini Amarasuriya as the Prime Minister on Monday, following his leftist coalition’s decisive victory in the recent general elections. The National People’s Power (NPP) coalition, led by Dissanayake, secured 159 of 225 parliamentary seats, solidifying its mandate.
Veteran legislator Vijitha Herath was also reinstated as the Foreign Affairs Minister. However, no new Finance Minister was named, signalling Dissanayake’s intention to retain the portfolio, as he has since his presidential victory in September.
Dissanayake, a political outsider in a nation historically dominated by dynastic politics, dissolved the previous parliament to call for snap elections. The victory provides him the legislative power to advance his agenda of combating corruption and poverty, essential for Sri Lanka’s recovery from its economic crisis.
The island nation, with a population of 22 million, is still reeling from a 2022 financial meltdown that led to a sovereign debt default and economic contractions of 7.3% in 2022 and 2.3% in 2023. While the election outcome enhances political stability, analysts note uncertainty remains regarding Dissanayake’s plans to renegotiate the terms of Sri Lanka’s International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout program.
