LHC Moves Against Huge Increase in Petrol Prices

LAHORE – A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) challenging the recent increase in petroleum prices. The petition claims that the government’s decision to raise petrol by Rs 55 per liter is illegal. It argues that this hike will harm the public and increase costs across multiple sectors.
The petitioner stated that the price increase will raise transportation, electricity, agricultural, and essential goods expenses. Citizens will face higher living costs as a result. The petition emphasizes that these sectors are particularly sensitive to fuel price fluctuations.
The petition further argued that oil marketing companies already hold a 15-day stock of petroleum products. Therefore, the increase is unjustified and unnecessary at this time. It highlighted that the government and regulatory authorities have not provided a clear rationale for the hike.

The petitioner has requested the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the Ministry of Energy to provide detailed information about existing petroleum reserves. Transparency in stock levels, the petition argues, will clarify the necessity of any price increase.
the petition urges the high court to declare the notification regarding the petrol price hike null and void. It asks for immediate relief to protect public interests and prevent further economic strain.
